Florida Sunshine: Tampa & Naples

For me, Tampa was more than just hope for warmth.  It also meant a chance to see family...LOTS of family.  Most of my father's side of the family live(d) in Tampa as I was growing up.  Consequently I have many memories of making the 12 hours drive down from NC after Christmas to spend the rest of the holiday with the Masseys.  60 or 70 degrees on New Years Eve was always weird though!

I was able to stay with my aunt during the week and see almost all 6 of my cousins and their families.  My oldest cousin is a pastor in a new church.  He asked me to sing on that Sunday and played for me as well.  That marked our first "duet" together :)

While it was warmer than Toronto, it wasn't ALL that warm.  In fact, it was quite windy.  That didn't stop us from enjoying the awesome art fair that was going on right outside the theater downtown.  I liked it so much that I made my first real grown-up art purchase.  I was nervous :)  But I got to meet the artist of the unique piece and can't wait to hang it up in my apartment back home!

*I have to mention that I was surprised at one performance by the older couple that was camping next to us last summer in the Adirondack Mountains (see an earlier post).  Can you believe they remembered us from upstate NY!!  I love those kind of stories :)*

Naples gave us the first chance to hit the beach...and we did as soon as the rain stopped :)  It was SO WONDERFUL to sit in the sun.  I definitely got a little more color than I bargained for...cause I guess I was enjoying it too much :)

I also found this fantastic cafe only a couple of miles from our hotel called the Sunburst Cafe.  The owner is Jerome, a Boston transplant who probably makes the best muffins I have ever laid eyes on.  Unfortunately I couldn't eat them myself because of the gluten, but by the smell and my cast members reactions I could tell he knocked it out of the park.  Plus, he was SO generous, giving more than a plateful as gifts to the cast.  The best part was that he brought his family to see our show on Saturday night.  I feel like I made a friend!  So, if you are ever in the area you will be delighted with the food and welcomed by the owners of the Sunburst down in Naples. I got to borrow Melissa's convertible (shown in the pic above) and it was AWESOME! :)

We also had to say goodbye to the smallest member of our cast, Carly Sonenclar, who played Carrie.  She will be missed!

Soon we'll be back in my home state, North Carolina!

  1. Yeah - that`s great. I look into your Blog at a late hour - and I see there that you have reported once more. And you have to tell many new, exciting stories again. I am very much pleased that you could see many members of your family and could spend much time with them. A duet with your cousin - it seems, that you are a member of an extremely artistic and musical family?! Surely such moments of music are completely enriching and bring you together.

The photo of the beach is marvelous. I like it very much. I myself spent a couple of days by the sea last week and I made a similar photo actually there. :) You lie there, hear the hissing of the waves and the squawking of the seagulls. You feel the liberty and boundlessness. The sea and the beach are places which donate much energy and inner quiet. :)

Why did you have to say goodbye to little Carrie? You still play about three months? Farewells are always very difficult and are not beautiful moments. But in German you say: Man sieht sich immer zweimal im Leben. ;) All best for little Carly!

    Greetings, Julia

  2. Carrie needed to get back home to be with her family. I can't imagining being away from my family for almost a year when I was 11 years old! But we have another girl that gets a chance to play the role. We certainly miss Carly, but are happy for our new girl, Anastasia.!

Man sieht sich immer zweimal im Leben....does that mean something like "we will always see someone at least twice in life"?

  3. Hi Kevin,
yeah, your translation of the quote is right!

It´s nice to "read" from you!
I´m glad that you got a chance to meet your family!
I don´t have any aunts or oncles and therfore no cousins, but my husband´s got many, many, many of them and is always fun to meet them. Two of them actually live in the USA......... ;)

In Germany we have finally springtime and I looooooooove the sun! I was so sick of the snow that now I spent as much time outside as I can to catch the rays of sun. :))
Though I cannot compare with the pictures you and Julsch took at the beach! Julschis pictures are a piece of art itself, they are simply wonderfull!

It must be tough to be away from your parents for a year when you´re only 11 years old.
My biggest son is 12 years old and I would miss him like crazy!!! Though sometimes when one of my boys is gone for a week or so it´s okay ( suddenly it´s so quiet in the house ;P ) but I can´t imagine for a year, at least not now.

In Hamburg we also have to say goodbye to one of the cast members of Tarzan. After saying goodbye to the best Tarzan of the show last July :)), now the second best Tarzan will leave : Anton.
He´ll play his last show on May 9th and we are all curious what he will do next!

I read on the facebook site of prairie that Kara had to leave the show for a while, what happend to her? I hope she is alright!

Today I will spend the rest of the day at the side of a Hockey field, to cheer on my son.... :)
On this note, I wish you a wonderful day,
    sunny greetings from Hamburg,

    Kirsten*

  4. I think the same like Kirsten and Julia: It's always great to be with the family. In July my Aáunt and cousin from Canada will visit us, it will be so great, I look forward to it. Probably they want to watch "Lion King" and "Tarzan" ;).
And it's always great at the sea, especially when the sun is shining. We have great weather at the moment in Hamburg, the sun is shining, the sky is blue (I can't see the ash cloud from Iceland...) and it's warm. Today I had a soccer game, it was really hard to play, because it was that warm, but we won 7:1 so it was a nice, warm sunday for me ;)
Lots of greeting to you Kerstin

  5. @Kirsten* Oh wow, Anton is leaving? I need to send him a note! And Kara had to leave the show for a little surgery. She's back and better than ever now :)

@Kerstin Congrats on that soccer game! Wow...7:1...that's a landslide victory!
