Back from Break, Let's go WEST! (Spokane)

Yep, a goat....but not just any kind of goat.  Though unassuming, this meek metal animal packs a powerful special skill.  Just inch your way towards it...SLOWLY...slowly...have your piece of trash or pine cone or small object you never want to see again in your had...push button to right of goat....now feed your trash to the friendly animal...don't be shy...go ahead...and watch it...WOOSH!...the goat has sucked up your trash so quickly you barely know what to do with yourself ;)  You HAVE to try this if you go to Spokane.  It is one of the left over exhibits from the '74 World's Fair held at the fantastic park right in downtown Spokane.

We also met a fascinating street musician called Tommy G from the 509.  Kara and I found another fantastic breakfast spot, Madeline's (which has coffees the size of the milchekaffes I found in Germany!).  This guy was playing is guitar in the corner of the cafe, singing with more soul than I've heard in a while from a white guy :)  We got to talkin for about 30 minutes or so, and he has quite a life story.  I found him in the park a couple days later "busting" (defiantly playing on a bench with his case out for money...which is currently illegal in Spokane).  So, I guess I broke the law with him and bought one of his CDs....take that Uncle Sam!
(This is another famous landmark in the park.  We made a cast photo before we left!)

All in all, besides the small hail storm we got, Spokane was a great little town.  I was excited to get to our next destination because it is near my sister in CA!

  1. Hi, Kevin. Saw your show last night in Dallas, and enjoyed it immensely. As many people did, I grew up reading the books, and eventually married a man who is from a town 20 miles away from (and even smaller than) the REAL, DeSmet, SD, so we were both pleased that the musical was set THERE.

Enjoyed all the performances, enjoyed the show as a whole, and hope the rest of your Dallas run goes well.

If you haven't tried a branch of Cafe Brazil yet, you ought to. Their food is reasonably healthy, and well prepared. Cosmic Cafe is also excellent if you're into vegan food.

  2. Ohhh the next blog, that's fast. Now I am a little bit overstrained, haha ;)
Spokane must be a great little town. It sounds very interesting and nice what you wrote about Spokane. I esprecially like the goat!
And your meeting with Tommy G sounds really interesting too! He must be a great street musician!
Today I had a nice breakfast too. Yesterday was the birthday of my best friend and today we celebrate her birthday with breakfast at the Elbe (in Blankenese). Today also is the birthday of my dad. At the moment there are a lot of friends of our family in our living room. They aren't that quit, but it is ok. I hope I will get a little bit sleep tonight ;)

Thanks again for your blog and lots of greetings Kerstin

Kerstin, you're not used to me writing so quickly...neither am I :) Hope you had a great time at the Elbe. So many birthdays to celebrate! Yes, sleep well and often

  4. Hey Kevin! Thanks for the new impressions and experiences! At the moment I have few free time and therefore I cannot answer so in detail as I would like to make. But I read of course interestedly and I am pleased about every message of you!
The goat is magnificent. This is absolutely art! The meeting with the musician also sounds exciting. Such meetings can arrive very unexpectedly and leave lasting impressions.
Kara and you seeming to be tall supporters of eating, isn't that right? You write so often and so much of delicious meal and stopping off in any cafés and restaurants. A good variant, to make culinary experiences and primarily it is very sociable.
The tour is drawing to the end, right? Have you already plans for the time after prairie?
    Glück auf, Julia

  5. Julia: Yes, I guess we are fans of eating :) It's true I write about it a lot. But I think the food tells a lot about the town we are in. The tour is drawing to an end, so I have to eat out as much as I can before I can't afford it any more :) I do have something after Prairie...will post on the website soon!

Hope you ALL are doing well over there!

  6. Glad you liked Cosmic Cafe.

In Sioux Falls, there are a lot of great cafes downtown, and y'all (I'm allowed to use "y'all" because I live in Texas) should check out Zandbroz, which isn't a cafe, but a sort of modern dry goods store (they call themselves a variety store) with books by local authors, and a retro soda fountain.

In feel, if not in merchandise, it's very much a mercantile.

(Actually, their site, zandbroz dot com, has some cafe recs.)

And point of trivia: my niece attended Laura Wilder elementary in Sioux Falls.

Obligatory fan question: Is there ever going to be a LHOTP soundtrack released?

  7. Kevin, the food-stories are great and interesting. :) In addition - a much and substantial meal shows a good quality - the enjoying. Who enjoys, is living! We are all little enjoyer und Schleckermäulchen. ;)
I am very curious what you will do after the prairie. And of course, all of us hope furthermore that a new project brings you to Germany/Europe some time. Don't let us wait too long with the news!
    All the best, Julia

@MissMeliss Looking forward to checking out Zandbroz. Sounds interesting! And I wish we had put out a cast recording of LHOP...our producers did promise it was coming...but alas...it will not happen. I'm bummed too!
