Deep in the heart of TEXAS

I think I ate my weight in barbecue during our 5 weeks here.  That's right, between 3 cities (Houston, Dallas & Ft Worth), we spent 5 weeks of the spring in one of the biggest states in America.  And everyone in Texas tells you where the "best BBQ in town" is....and it's NEVER the same place :)  I probably went to 5 different places that all claimed top prize.  But one of the spots was actually in-between shows in Houston when the local crew brought in their own meat, grill and sauce to feed us right in back of the theater.

It was HUMID down there....wow.  I remember dreaming about warm weather when we were freezing in Toronto earlier this year.  But a couple days here almost made you pine for the frigid north.  And it wasn't even the dog days of summer yet!

Houston also gave us an opportunity to get a private tour of the NASA Space Center.  This was probably one of THE BEST field trips we made on tour.
Above is the HUGE pool where the submerge mock-ups of the space station and practice space walks with astronauts preparing for a trip to do the real thing.  A pool is as close to weightlessness as we can get.  Below is a picture of the trainees coming back up from the practice.
We got a chance to talk to one seasoned astronaut that had done 9 different space walks!  He was so cool, actually asking us questions about our show.  We got him to tell a story about one of his space walks where he almost lost his life.  All of our jaws were dropped as he was telling the details.  This was no movie...this was the REAL DEAL! WOW!  The also let us in Mission Control (the very one that  was used in the Apollo 13 mission and many others. Below is probably how I would have reacted to the dire situation.....

Ft. Worth had a fantastic new performing arts house that looks like an old opera house.  Plus, we got a chance to go down the the stockyards and saw many more boots than bulls.  Check it out!

Sorry it's not rotated...I can't figure out how to do that on my blog!

  2. Hey Kev!

Now it´s over and we did´t get a chance to see Prairie.
We didn´t win the lottery and singing in the streets wasn´t as lucrative as we thought! ;)
It´s a pity that we don´t get the chance to hear you sing either cause there is no musical CD coming up! :( That´s sad!

I hope you´re doing alright after the shock in the plane but that is not the way we want to hear or see any news about you!!! ;)
Do you know already what you´re going to do next?

I´m amazed by all the wonderfull and exiting places you got to see during your tour!
It must be so much fun!
And I love all your pictures: food, canyons, boots, houses, art and many more, it´s brilliant!

Summer finally arriverd in Germany! My kids have only 4 days of school before summerbreak and we´re hoping for a lovely, warm summer! :))

    Many greetings from sunny Hamburg,
    hugs Kirsten*

P.S. Anton feels a little bit WICKED the last few days…. ;P
He´s going to play Fiyero in Oberhausen after the summer.

  3. WAY TO GO!
Congrats Kevin on your new job as Willard!!!
    I love Footloose!

I haven´t seen the Musical yet but I love the movie. Among the music and dancing also the story of Footloose is interesting.
And no more wintercoasts as it plays in the summer! ;)

Did I get it right that Footloose is only runnig a week at the Muny or will it be a tour again?

    TOI, TOI, TOI from Hamburg,

  4. @Kim...I know, it's crazy, isn't it!

@Kirsten: So sad none of us won the lottery..;( Maybe something else lucky will happen! Glad summer finally found it's way to Germany. It is DEFINITELY here! And a huge congrats to Anton for Wicked. I remember him saying it might happen. Guess people will have to make a trip down to Oberhausen, eh :) And yes, Footloose is only a week at the MUNY. This is how they do it. Though, it holds about 10000 people each night, I think...so we wouldn't be able to run for a long time...everyone will have seen us :)

  5. I had the opportunity to take my 8 yr old daughter to the show while you were in Ft Worth. I thought you and Kara did a great performance and we both loved the show. A few weeks later and my daughter still wants to see pictures and is acting out Little House plays of her own. Alas, she has no Almanzo.

I had to smile when I saw your blog because in the play I thought you and Kara did a good job "acting" like you were a couple. :)

Best of luck in your next role!

I'm in St. Louis now starting rehearsals for FOOTLOOSE tomorrow. What a crazy life!

    all the best,
    Kevin
