New Years in the Appalachians

Wow, it was so great to be home with my family.  We PRAIRIE folk are lucky that we all get along and enjoy each other's company.  However, everyone needs a break here and there when you are seeing each other ALL THE TIME :)  So, this holiday break was the perfect timing.  On top of it all, we had a white Christmas in Denver and one at home in North Carolina.

This is the house I grew up in (pictured above).  You are only seeing a portion of the house, an original log cabin that my parents found in another section of the mountains, took apart, reassembled here, and then built the rest of the house next to it.  One of the best parts of the house is actually what it allows you to look at from a cozy dining room table.  See below!

It is hard to leave a place like this.  However, duty called and I answered.  I soon found myself in the next stop on our tour (Fayetteville, Arkansas) missing my mountain home.  One gift I gave to my father this year was a new ax for chopping wood. It was needed, to say the least.  His other two axes were hanging on by a thread...soon to be the culprit of a home tragedy!  So, before I left, Dad made sure he got some action shots with his new ax.  The "sensible" one is at the top of this posting.  The "home tragedy" is below.  Thank goodness I like my brother, or it would have been off with his head!

  1. Hey Kevin!
What kind of marvelous pictures and nice words of you.
The house, the surroundings, the landscape - It looks so lovely and really comfortable.
It was surely a peaceful and unforgettable childhood to grow up in such a nature rich surroundings?! :)
It must be an incredibly glaring difference: The parental home in such a quiet area and the life in a big city and the tours of the whole country. It is for certain something quite precious to arrive there and to detect peace. I am pleased that you could spend Christmas there.
Your brother looks very similar to you. Thank you for your beautiful photo.
Nice that you have spent such a beautiful time together without greater occurrences or tragedies.
The weekday starts again now. But you seem to have nice colleagues with whom you still will experience a wonderful time now. :)
    Greetings, Julia

  2. Hi Kevin, i wish you a Happy New Year.

The Pictures look really great, the scenery is wonderful.
Nice that you could spend a few days with your family. Unfortunately, the work shouts sometime again and one has to go back to reality ;).
The ax was really a good idea, he can use them absolutely well ;).

I wish you a great weekend.

    Best wishes Anke :)

  3. Hello Kevin!
Thanks for the nice, beautiful, funny pictures!
My aunt and uncle in Canada live near with the nature too. When I visited them in July/August, one morning I looked out of the window and then there was bear sitting there, eating berries. It must be great to grow up with nature all around, but for me it was a little bit strange, because I live in Hamburg since I was born. But I liked it there ;)

  4. Julia & Anke, I hope the work week went well for you! I got a little sick, so it was a little harder than it usually is ;( But it was still fun.

Kerstin: We're going to be in Toronto, Canada in a couple of weeks. I don't think we'll see too much nature there, so it was a good thing I got to see it in North Carolina! Nature is awesome, right?!?

  6. Yes, you are right! Nature is awesome and very good for the soul. I would like to have nature now, but I'm sitting here in my room and have to learn. In one week I have very important exams, school-leaving examiniations. I think it will be very difficult and hard. I will try my very best and I think I can do it then ;)
Lots of greetings to you Kerstin
