I put some pictures of the last reading I did up on my website (including the one above). It was a musical written around the music of Peter Gabriel called US. These types of events happen all the time in NYC. It's a chance for writers, composers, etc to see their work performed without having to put up a ton of money for sets, costumes, a venue, etc. Most of these works are "a work in progress", so there are many changes to come.

This was the first public performance of US. It's great for we actor folk because you meet a lot of new people in a short amount of time (a reading usually only take 1 week to rehearse and is only 1 performance). Plus, you have to think on your feet and learn the show VERY quickly. An added bonus is discovering great new music like Peter Gabriel's. I really had no idea of the depth of his work. You should check out some of his stuff from the late 1980s to early 1990s.

Tarzan started like this. In fact, I think there were several "readings" before they moved forward with a full production. Even from the first rehearsals, there were many changes before we finally opened on Broadway. There are actually lots of different things in the German production too. It's fascinating to see how art progresses.

  1. Sounds great- seems to be a small touch of Off- Broadway (tryout theatres?)- without costumes.
Here in Germany we have the workshops (without audience) for new shows.

In general it´s a great thing to see how art is developing. Is this event for the public, too?

  2. This event was open to the public, but they are private sometimes.

  3. Thanks for the explanation what "reading" means. This sounds unbelievably exciting. It is surely a great help for the writers and investors. And for you it must be an excellent feeling and a great task of being a part of this development and this important step! ;)

Such an event like this gives you surely the possibility of concentrating exclusively on the music. Great!
Sometimes it would be surely quite nice only to sit there and to listen to the music. Tarzan for example is a musical in which the many flight scenes and the magnificent outfits and stage sets can quite turn away of the music - sometimes! ;P
Even if such a reading is not fully developed, I can imagine that it is nevertheless beautiful and very relaxing.
I would like to experience such an event sometime, too. :)

  4. Was "Love NY" also a reading?
I like the music and from what I can see, on YouTube, it must have been fun!

The only songs I know of Peter Gebriel are "Slegdehammer" and "Don´t give up", they remind me of my time in school. And I had a lot of fun back then.........;-)

  5. yes, it is nice to not get distracted by staging sometimes....but not every reading or show is very good...so at those times, you wish you were distracted by something!!! ;)

LOVE, NY was a reading. Definitely a fun one.

Yes, readings are the best chance to develop your (acting, singing) skills!! And its a blame that we can't participate in that, as a girl from NY, who is Webmaster of JoshStricklandOnline.net, did in a reading for "Play it cool", where Josh was acting in at NYMT Festival ... hach! So, keep us updated..
