A DAY WITHOUT MUSIC, THIS WAS NOT

What a day on the PRAIRIE! We sang from dusk til dawn and then some more. I believe we will sing all day tomorrow too. But, I LOVE IT, though it is tiring. In spite of having a previous production, almost every song has changed. Some are large changes and some are just a word here and there. There is a new song for Laura, the main girl...and my eventual bride :) And they gave me a new one as well for the second act. It's quite lovely. I wish I could post it online. But alas, you will have to come see the show!...or I suppose you could just get the CD. But the show is much more fun to see live!!!

(Picture is of Rachel Portman, Oscar winning composer who also wrote our music for PRAIRIE. She and Donna DiNovella created all of our songs...and all the changes! Pic from Telegraph.co.uk)

As usual, with new shows, there are changes upon changes. As we were singing some of the songs, the writers were sitting in the room and saying, "you know, do you think you could try singing "have" instead of "will"?" or "do you mind singing a high G at the end to fill out the chord?" We are literally making it up on the spot. I LOVE IT! It's always interesting to see what you end up with in the end.

Actually, on the Broadway TARZAN recording, you will hear a different musical ending than we actually used in the show. The CD has Tarzan and Jane singing "With every ending comes a new beginning..." before the cast comes in. That was cut before we opened, but we had already recorded it for the CD. That's why many new shows don't release the CD until after they are already open.

We will see what new notes await us tomorrow.....

  1. Thank you Kevin for your everyday Blog.
It is to be seen interesting like themselves such a production during the tests changed.
I know only the TV serial of "Little House on the Prairie" and am an absolute fan of it. Indeed, I ask myself like this material in a musical is moved.

I find it not at all bad if the CD's of musicals are different as the piece themselves, one has to go least a reason to the show and one can always discover something new.

  2. Good morning!

Oh, this listen everything so fantastic. And then you say, that we shall watch the show. I would like to do exactly this. But America is unfortunately not the Netherlands or England. The costs and the effort would be far too large and my family would declare me buggy - because of a musical to America! ;P
But I would like to see it so much. You must simply prolong your tour once again a couple of months and come here to Europe with that. This would be perfect. :)
Will there be a Cd of the new production (with the new songs and the changes)? Where also you on this Cd can be heard? Then we can order these to us at least and fetch a little prairie home. ;)

Unfortunately, I am musically completely untalented. Because of this, unfortunately either, I have no idea about "high G" and something like that. I think, it's something from the scale?! But I have no idea! There is also anything with "dur" and "mol"?! I have learned something like that in school, but I have never understood it. ;)
I am exclusively good to listen to music. And deciding, whether it is good or not. However, I also only make this dependent on whether I like the melody and it touches my heart. Alone this is essential for me, whether it is good music. :)

Before my comment gets so long again, I close it with the following words now.
A sunny day for you all
and for you a lot of joy at the touching of other hearts, Sassy Massey! ;)

  3. Thank you for the explanation of your nickname. I also think that it's a very nice and funny name :)
Oh yes, we already discussed about the last song on the german cd which is the same as on the broadway cd. Looks like they took the orchestra of the broadway version and just the german singers, do you know that? Is that usual in making musical cds?
Weather is getting better and better in Germany but slowly we become accustomed to it ;)
Have a nice evening everyone and have a great day, Sassy
    Marietta

Oh, and Kirsten: great idea, we will keep it in mind :)

  4. Ohh that all sounds very interesting and exciting. To produve a new production means many changes before it goes on stage.

Julia, next time you'll be in Hamburg I will give some extra tuition in music, maybe then you know all and will be a musical star soon :D

  5. Haaa, that sounds so exciting to me!! Development in time, all of a sudden it could be a totally different tone even if you're singing the same!! It's incredible how smallest changes are able to create a full new "sentiment" !! I LOVE music, I hope (really BAD) I'll end up in this "society".. musicians are really nice, sweet, electrifying, passionist, creative humans ;) It's always fun with them, isn't it?!?! :P
So, good luck for the show's rehearsing and break a leg on stage (U know it's only a phrase) :D
Kirsten and I, we both are going to trip to JERSEY to watch your performance!! So be good, cuz we can SEE... We'll have an eye on you (actually 2 pairs, but that's just a phrase..again xD)
Are we "määämbers" able to post pics as well??^^
Good night!! Sleep tight and drink some hot milk&honey... ur voice will appreciate this!

  6. Good evening!

Kevin, we all would love to see the show, but probably we will not make it. :(
Fränky´s got a sore throught already......;)
And my singing skills are not the best, although I love to sing (especially with Kerstin *g*) and do it all day.
But as soon as you know where we can get the cd, tell us please, maybe we get some quantity discount........hihi
By the way, what about your song from Jay Zimmermann? Did you develop?
I guess you are too busy with Prairie at the moment, aren´t you?

I would love to be a little mouse and hide at the rehearsals and hear you sing all day! It must be so much fun seeing everyone exited and into the musical!
Have time, watch people and the environment is a great pleasure! I could sit in a crowded place for hours just watching people without getting bored! It´s so fascinating how different people are.....

Incidentally, I met Mella today in Hamburg (she lives in Bavaria) and we went to the DOM (fair) together with her mom and Finn Krister. We had fun together and it was sooooo good to see her again!!! It´s also fascinating that you meet lovely people and become friends with them because you like the same musical...... :)

So, I will go to bed now, the wether is still so hot in HH, that´s not good for my poor heart... ;)

Sassy Massey, I wish you a wonderful day full of singing!

    Hugs, Kirsten*

  7. Hi, Kevin

thank you for sharing your thoughts and activities with us. In general I love to see how a show, or should I generally say, art, is developing.

Indeed, I am still busy in Hamburg´s shopping mall to raise the money for our US trip, but I am afraid that it will tae some time. The people would give me some money just that I stop singing... what a pitty! *ggg* As Kirsten has already said, I already have a sore throat *gg*

For my part, I am better in cooking than in singing (I made American Spare Rips today- without Nutella on the top!) :p

Sassy, have a great time and lots of fun with the rehearsals.

    Many regards, take care,

    Franka

    P.S.
Speaking about latin parasites: Marietta, I was not swimming in the Alster today, I finally found a route to our local swimming pool, just to talk with them and to share with other people :p

  8. Hi Kevin!

It's so great hearing from you frequently!
I'd love to see you in your new production,in fact,I grew up with "Little house of Prairie".
Wasn't "Almanzo Wilder" the guy,who married "Laura Ingalls" later?
And,of course,I remember the outstanding Michael Landon in the role of "Charles Ingalls",the father of Laura. It was very sad, that he died so early. What a great actor!

I hope the weather at your place is as good as it is right now in Germany.
I love those mild Summernights, when you sit in the garden until sunrise, that's just fantastic.
That's for now....have a good remaining weekend,I've to get ready and organized for work again. Two more weeks, then I'll be off on vacation, yipieh!!!

    Take care,
    Tonia

  9. Hello all,
Yes, there is supposed to be a CD for PRAIRIE. I'm not sure when we will record it, but I assume it will be done before we leave NYC in October.

Re the German Tarzan soundrack: I don't believe they used our same recorded tracks for background. At least, they shouldn't have. Because much of it is done with synthesizers, it sounds a lot like the Broadway version.

Chris: not sure if you are able post pics. Is there something you want to put up?

Tonia: yep, Almanzo is the one who marries Laura. I give her the "Wilder" name! :)

It would be wonderful to have you see the production here, but I certainly do not expect you to. It is EXPENSIVE and far away! It may come closer to you someday.

I'm enjoying my day off! ahh.....

  10. Hello Kev, hello määämbers!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
Yesterday I´ve been to the Christopher Street Day in Hamburg and it was sooo much fun watching the people. There was a crazy parade with all the gay people and a street fair around the Binnenalster. The mood was great! Everyone was having fun, the weather was lovely and the music was good! I loved the dragqueens! Some of them looked really beautiful and I cannot comprehend how they walk on those high-heels without breaking their necks. ;)

Oh, there is a comment from you I haven´t seen before.....
I actually wanted to ask you, if you also work at the weekends, but now I know you had a day off! :-) So, keep on enjoying it!

    It´s bedtime for me now!
    Take care!

  11. I think the German Tarzan soundtrack used the recorded tracks from the Netherlands.
I think to remember it.... Andreas told us, that they must decided... Live-records, but then it would be took very long.
Or they took the recorded tracks from the Netherlands and so the Cd would be ready accurate to the premiere.
And so they used it from our Neighbours! ;)
