It was heart warming to see the creative team again and many of the cast members from the last production. The new additions seem like a fantastic fit. I'm looking forward to getting to know them all in the coming weeks. First up: memorizing names! I've decided I am good at this now. No more blaming forgetfulness on my father's genes. I am changing my destiny :) The mind is a powerful thing, folks. What are YOU telling it to do?
I'm resting up for what will surely be a rigorous costume fitting first thing in the morning. Trying on clothes is hard!... :) wow, do I really get paid to do this?!?

ReplyDeleteI'm in a similar situation as you, my next exam is about parasites and everyone of them has a beautiful Latin name... :( Very hard for me to memorize!
I really can imagine your happiness to see your "old" team again, I think you can feel lucky to have the possibility to work with them again. If you know each other well, it will be simpler to get a good working climate and to have fun at work.
Perhaps you can tell us more about your rehearsals, I think that's very interesting for all of us.

Puh, today it took long with my comment. The text was not quite simple for me this time! This Blog is really a hard training for me! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe first day is always very exciting and something special! The first impressions are very essential!!! I am pleased that you have met many old and kind faces again. You surely will experience with all of them a quite wonderful and exiting year now.
Many different towns, many different theaters, many different people.
But maybe on the other side it will be hard to be away for a so long time and to be without a solid seat. But I think the positive aspects outweigh!! ;)
Enjoy all the preparation for the show and to get to know all other member.
It isn't always easy to remember names and numbers. But something like that can be exercised, for example with brain jogging. I make this regular. I don't notice any advancement yet but I think tightly that it helps! ;P
If not, then you simply learn the German language perfectly. Who does manage to remember all the words and the grammar - for this person it's afterwards a simple thing to learn names!! I would find this good! :)
But you are right. For his smaller weaknesses you find fast and often an excuse in the genes. Something has very good, something else has very different amended. But if you want, then everything goes! :)
I am curious what experiences you make at the rehearsals. I hope, you find the time meanwhile to report!

ReplyDeleteIt´s so nice to read that you had a good start at the rehearsals. If I got this right, you don´t have to learn your wife`s and your parents´ in law names. ;)
I think it´s interesting that some people can learn names very easily and other not.
Actually I´m very good at it and also in recognizing faces.
Two weeks ago I met a woman in a shoe store, I haven´t seen for like 13 years (she was a teenager when I last saw her) and as I saw her face I instandly knew her name.
But I think it´s odd that sometimes names from people I have met a long time ago come more easy to my mind than from people I have met recently...... ?(
Marietta, have you thought about lerning those names with a "Eselbrücke" (memory hook)?

Yes Kirsten, I actually try to find some memory hooks at the moment. For example, Trypanosoma brucei which leads to sleeping sickness, I try to remember as "try piano in summer "bruzzeln"" (bruzzeln=sizzle in english) I often mix there english and german words, so I get enough different spelling words ;)
ReplyDeleteIt takes so long time to find so many memory hooks, but you are right, it's much easier and often I have fun with some very crazy memory hooks :) That's why my exam has to wait, until I have found enough ways to memorize these awful words :)
Marietta, just think of the way Jane is saying those latin names of the flowers and plants- Mimulus Aurantiacus etc...- just sing it *g*
ReplyDeleteI can imagine that the first time of rehearsals is a little bit hard, but interesting- it is the same like in other jobs and projects. It seems to be like our business projects during my studies- preparing a presentation, on my own or in a group- learning the different types of business models and the theory about them.
However, at the end it was fun :-)

Till now, everything was understandable - well, even if it has lasted with the one or different comment a little longer! It's ok!!
And the effect shall not suffer! ;)
And once again to studying and keeping names. You can also alter these names individuel. To give nicknames for example. So it is perhaps also easier for someone. I like to do this very often! And it promotes the creativity!
Or you can add the first two letters of the first name and the first two letters of the last name up together. Then you would become the name KeMa. ;)
You can so much play and experiment with names. This is fun! :)

I had an english nickname when I was younger...
My friends from Englang had difficulties to say KIRSTEN, so I told them my german nickname was Kirsche, that means cherry (one of my favorite fruits *g*) , so they called me CHERRY. :-)
We where talking about your nickname alresdy, Sassy!
Sassy or Sassi is short for the female german name Saskia, so when we pronounce it german it sounds female to our ears..... *ggg*
We´ll try to pronounce it american, I tell Julia everyday...... hihi (not true)
By the way, Julia is doing so great with her translating programm, everytime she writes a comment, she seems to find the perfekt words!

ReplyDeleteGood luck with all the salads and parasites and KeMa's and JuSc's..did I miss anything? ;) Actually "Sassy" means "with attitude" but usually a fun/spicy kind of attitude. The dictionary definition: "Lively and spirited; jaunty" They started calling me "Sassy Massey" in the Broadway company of Tarzan because it rhymes and because I was very shy and quite in the beginning but then I began to "come out of my shell" and give some SASS! :)
Alexandra, I'm glad you wrote. You may write in whatever language you would like. I'll find a translation if my wonderful fellow blog-posters haven't already translated it for me (thank you Marietta et al!)
